The growth in cyber attacks on critical infrastructure is largely due to these companies' increasing reliance on computer networks in the aftermath of the 2001 terrorist attacks, according to Mr. Kellermann, who is now a vice president at a computer security firm Core Security Technologies. These companies grew more dependent on computer networks when they created backup systems to stay up and running in the event of a terrorist attack or other type of major outage, he said.
