Abstract:
Operational risk and asymmetric threats have skyrocketed due to corporate America’s dependence on information technology in this digital age. The focus of this workshop on providing some situational awareness about the current threat environment and new generation of threats, and provide some guidance on how might enterprises and organizations can best manage the risks posed by new popular technologies. Web 2.0, cloud computing, wireless communications and other recent computing trends have substantially increased the ability to collaborate, communicate and share information, both internally and externally, which have been embraced by companies, government organizations and consumers as a wonderful way to conduct business effectively. However, this same ability to interconnect so easily with the outside world is what is opening the door for potentially devastating security threats. These threats vary widely in nature, from harmless nuisance malware, to large-scale attacks and intellectual property theft, to national security and beyond. The presentations we will cover the evolving threat landscape to Fortune 1000 companies and government organizations. The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion of on proven policies and technologies to effectively asses and manage this operational risk. The ultimate goal of the workshop is to articulate what we know and don’t know about security threats and effective risk management approaches to define a relevant research agenda going forward.
